Japanese-born, Makiko Hirata, has had an enviable musical education. She studied privately with Emiko Ito and Andrew Thomas before moving to the Juilliard Pre-College where she was a student of Herbert Stessin and Richard Fabre. She has a Bachelor’s degree from the Manhattan School of Music and a Master’s degree from New York University. Her talents were widely recognized during her studies and she won the MSM Presnet’s award at the Manhattan School.

As a professional musician, Hirata has played around the world. At the tender age of 17, she touted with the National Symphony Orchestra of Bolivia. She has also toured as a soloist with the Pecs Hungarian Symphony Orchestra, led by conductors Zsolt Hamar and Phillpe de Chalendar, and has performed with the Polish Philharmonic Resovia and Romanian Arad State Philharmonia.

Hirata received a standing ovation at her solo debut at the Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall. She has performed subsequent recitals in New York, California, and Japan.

Makiko Hirata is also in high demand as a chamber musician and has collaborated with many other talented artists. This includes the clarinetist David Krakauer, the cellist Andre Emelianoff, the violinist Christiane Edinger, and the pianist Sara Davies Buechner. Hirata is a regular guest appearance at chamber music series worldwide, including Jupiter Symphony Chamber Players in New York City and the and Sarasota Chamber Music Festival.

Hirata is as much a dedicated teacher as she is a performer. She was a staff pianist of the Jupiter Symphony Orchestra until 2001 and a staff accompanist at the Julliard School until 2007. She was also the adjunct Piano Instructor at New York University and an adjunct Instructor of the Music Theory Department at the same school. In addition,  she was a teaching assistant at Japan’s Nara International Summer Academy and has been a teaching assistant to John Perry at  The Colburn School since 2008.
